take the stress out of college admissions

My Services

  • College Admissions

I provide one-on-one support for character-centered college admissions strategy and exceptional essays writing. I help students with all parts of the college admissions process. For students in 6th-11th grade, I provide advice on course selection and extracurricular activities, assist in conceptualizing and implementing a passion-driven project, and provide support in applying to selective summer programs. I help seniors develop balanced lists of colleges and universities, offer guidance on brainstorming application essays and supplemental materials, and edit personal statements, supplemental essays, and activities lists.

  • Test Prep

For the past 15+ years, I have enabled students to conquer high-stakes tests with confidence derived from thorough preparation. I prepare students for the SAT, ACT, HSPT, and SSAT.

My test prep sessions and the assigned homework are highly customized to the specific needs of each student. I seek to understand each student as an individual and create an iterative plan to help them reach their score goal.

  • Subject Tutoring

The two most important factors in college admissions are GPA and course rigor. College admissions officers want to see that a student is taking the most classes available to them in the core subjects: math, English language, social sciences, natural sciences, and a foreign language.

I help students primarily with coursework related to writing and math, from elementary-level Common Core math to AP Calc BC. If you are curious about whether I tutor a particular subject, please inquire below.

About bloomtwo

I believe that all students can be successful.

My tutoring method goes beyond teaching procedural knowledge. With each student, I seek to build a strong conceptual foundation in the material, develop persistence, and build genuine relationships. I believe that academic success is not determined by inherent talent, but can be reached through hard work, discipline, and perseverance.

My pedagogical method relies on:

  • Utilizing mastery learning techniques

  • Providing targeted homework practice

  • Developing growth mindset

  • Modeling goal setting

  • Heather Hoffman

    FOUNDER

I received a Master's degree in Education from Harvard University, where I conducted research on the effectiveness of SAT prep programs, as well as on social perspective taking in virtual environments.

For the past 15+ years, I have mentored hundreds of students in math, writing, and test prep. In 2018, I began my work as a private college counselor. I have worked as a researcher and computer science educator at Google, a data analyst and college application reader at Questbridge, and the selections manager for an coding school, where I managed a team of 15 software engineers and technical mentors. I care deeply about building student confidence and motivating students to achieve their goals.

  • The bloomtwo Difference

bloomtwo is named after Bloom's 2 sigma problem, a phenomenon discovered by pioneering education researcher, Benjamin Bloom. Through his research, Bloom discovered that, on average, students who were tutored one-on-one using the mastery learning instruction method scored two standard deviations higher than other students. In other words, these students scored above 98% of the students taught through conventional methods. At bloomtwo, we seek to leverage research-backed educational practices, including mastery learning methods, to empower our student to reach their goals.

  • My Students

For the past 15 years, I have been blessed to work with a diverse range of brilliant, talented, and extremely motivated students. I have tutored students from the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, D.C., and more. Since 2020, I have had the opportunity to connect with more international students, advising students from Dubai, Hong Kong, and Canada on the U.S. college admissions process.

Many of my students have ADHD, dyslexia, or severe test anxiety; some are mastering English as their second or third+ language. My goal is to build upon the unique strengths of each student and provide structured support for their individual needs. Most of my students are targeting top-tier colleges and universities. I have helped students gain admission to Brown, Columbia, Duke, Pomona, Princeton, Rice, UC Berkeley, Yale, and more.
